Tottenham are enduring a difficult season on the pitch, but it looks like off-pitch controversies are tagging along with the performances as the Lilywhites find themselves in the centre of another unexpected controversy, as Lilywhites supporters on social media have highlighted posts from a newly appointed staff member at Hotspur Way who has apparently referenced his support for Spurs’ arch-rivals Arsenal. These comments were first flagged online after he made remarks about how it was “tough” to put on the Tottenham jersey. He also went on to joke about not wanting the club badge to touch his skin. And to top it all up, he also made references to being an “inside man” at Hotspur Way. While the person in question described the comments as humour, many supporters have criticised the tone at which they were made and how inappropriate it is given that he has taken up a new role at Hotspur Way.
Fans have been raging at this, with a lot of them calling the club to take action. There is also a section of supporters who find humour in this as they see it more as harmless ‘banter’.
At the time of writing it is not clear what role that staff member holds at Hotspur Way or how he is involved with the club. There is also nothing on what actions Tottenham are taking as regards this internally.
It does show one thing: professionalism matters at a job irrespective of the club you hold at your heart. And by the looks of it, someone does not have that at Hotspur Way.
For Tottenham supporters, that identity in comparison to Arsenal is quite important. We are talking about one of the fiercest rivalries in English football. And then if you see someone taking out that rivalry and making it a sense of humour, it just strikes a nerve, doesn’t it?
There are already a lot of questions raised around the behind-the-scenes structure at Hotspur Way with how things have been going domestically in the past couple of years. Now having a scene like this just creates more uneasiness among the supporters as questions continue to rise on the club and those who are in charge of running it.
