Toni Kroos has questioned how the Saudi Pro League treats Cristiano Ronaldo, describing the situation as ironic given the impact the forward has had on its global profile.
The former Real Madrid midfielder suggested that the recent treatment of Ronaldo exposes a wider contradiction within the league.
Speaking during a recent episode of his podcast, Toni Kroos offered a blunt assessment of how the Saudi Pro League has handled Cristiano Ronaldo.
“The Saudi league is a funny place cause nobody heard of them before Cristiano joined, and now they are disrespecting the guy who gave them global recognition.
“I tell you if Cristiano leaves tomorrow, nobody watches the league anymore,” Kroos said.
Kroos framed the situation as contradictory. Ronaldo’s arrival at Al-Nassr was widely viewed as the moment the league entered the global football conversation, drawing attention from fans and broadcasters who had previously ignored it.
From Kroos’s perspective, any suggestion of marginalising Ronaldo ignores the commercial and cultural value he brought. The comment reflected frustration at how quickly influence can be taken for granted once attention becomes normalised.
Reports outlined by ESPN provided context on Ronaldo’s recent absence and return.
“According to sources, the Portugal captain said he will return to play for the match against Al Fateh on Feb. 14. According to reports, Ronaldo agreed to return to the pitch after seeing his main demands met by the PIF,” ESPN wrote.
The update suggested that tensions between Ronaldo and the club were resolved through negotiation rather than confrontation. His return reinforced his influence within the league’s structure.
Even so, Kroos’s comments underline a broader issue. The Saudi Pro League’s growth remains closely tied to star power, and Ronaldo sits at the centre of that expansion.
If the league’s credibility depends on global attention, figures like Ronaldo are difficult to replace. Kroos’s view was clear. Respecting that reality is not optional if the project is to remain relevant.
