Axed Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma apologizes for smoking a banned substance .

Yves Bissouma has apologized to Tottenham supporters after being photographed inhaling nitrous oxide last month, revealing the incident came in the wake of three terrifying burglaries that cost him £1 million and left him battling depression and paranoia. The 29-year-old Mali international spoke candidly about his mental health struggles following The Sun’s publication of the damning images.

Bissouma was caught using the Class C drug on a night out in November, marking the second time he has been found inhaling nitrous oxide. He was previously suspended by Spurs in August 2024 after the first occurrence. The club has launched an internal investigation into the latest incident, with Thomas Frank describing it as a disciplinary matter.

Speaking about the incident, Bissouma said (h/t The Irish Sun):

“I am sorry. This incident broke something in me I didn’t even know I could break. I apologize to the fans. The trauma added to my life, fear, panic, depression, and paranoia. I feel really bad about it. When the picture came out, it affected me and everyone, especially my family.”

Three Burglaries Left Yves Bissouma Living in Fear

The most serious burglary happened on November 25, 2024, when masked thieves attempted to hammer down his front door, forcing Bissouma to flee out the back. Five months later, in July, two men broke into his new London home and stole luxury designer watches, including a Rolex, an Audemars Piguet, and a Patek Philippe that can cost hundreds of thousands of pounds each.

Footage filmed by Bissouma moments after the July raid shows empty watch cases strewn across the floor. While shooting the video, Bissouma said:

“Look what they did. They robbed my watches. They robbed my jewellery. They took my bags as well, like, everything.”

Robbers also took jewellery and designer bags, with experts estimating his sneaker collection alone could be worth £21,000.

The burglaries forced Bissouma to move house twice. In June 2024, while in the south of France, he was also mugged and doused with pepper spray. To compound matters, he claims £1 million was stolen from him by a friend at the start of the year and is going through lawyers to recoup the money.

Bissouma revealed the trauma left him sleeping at Tottenham’s training ground for three, four, sometimes five days at a time because he was too scared to stay at his own home.

“My mental health has been bad at times. It is not an excuse for what happened, but I hope people can maybe understand me a bit more.”

The midfielder has not featured for Tottenham under Frank since August. He was dropped before the UEFA Super Cup due to repeated lateness but has since been sidelined by injuries, including ankle ligament damage that required surgery in October.

Bissouma spoke with a mental health therapist, sometimes five times a week, following the burglaries. He said:

“Sometimes in life you feel a bit down, but have to try to refresh your mind and stay strong. On my face, I was trying to show love, but my insides were burning.”

The midfielder hopes speaking openly about his mental health battles will encourage other sportsmen and women to feel comfortable discussing their experiences. He concluded:

“I don’t want to talk about it anymore because it’s over. But to the fans, I am very sorry. I want to move on from my mistakes. I like playing for Tottenham. I’m just thinking about being fit again and trying to enjoy football.”

Bissouma’s future at Tottenham remains uncertain despite his apology and openness about his struggles. His contract expires in June 2026, and speculation continues about whether he will ever wear the Spurs shirt again. The club will conclude its internal investigation before determining appropriate sanctions.
