On Thursday, Jannik Sinner continued his impressive run in the ongoing Indian Wells tournament as he dispatched Learner Tien in what can only be described as emphatic fashion, as he suffered a 6-1 6-2 humbling. Along with Cameron Norrie, they both remain the only players yet to drop a set in the tournament. The youngster found it incredibly difficult to even get into the match, as the grinding, long rallies he prefers were in short supply. He soon found himself packing his bags, not much longer after unpacking them to start with. While the headlines will be primarily about how dialed in Sinner was and how he looked so much more like his usual self, there was one interesting statistic that he notched up in the process.
This was Jannik Sinner’s 20th consecutive win against lefties.
It is another staggering statistic that certainly raises eyebrows. But for Sinner, it’s just another Thursday. His dominance over the past few years has made these stats seem pretty normal for him. In fact, the last time he lost to a lefty was in 2023 at the Shanghai Masters, when Ben Shelton got the better of him. That was their very first meeting, and, interestingly, since then they have played each other nine more times, and the powerful American has not even won a single set in any of those matches.
Moving away from the American, this run of wins has also included plenty of prominent lefties, including Jack Draper, Ugo Humbert, and Denis Shapovalov, who incidentally was also beaten by Sinner again this week. It is not only that he is winning these matches, but he’s winning them ruthlessly. He has not been at his best this year, but beating Tien quite easily now marks the third lefty win for the year, all in straight sets, having beaten Shelton this year at the Australian Open. It is one of those stats that don’t seem conceivable on first glance, but such feats have become routine for the Italian. For example, he won 33% of his return games last year, which seems ridiculous the longer you think about it.
As we advance now, it’s difficult to gauge how much impact such a statistic will have on lefties who have to face him in the coming weeks and months. Walking onto the court, knowing you are facing a player who holds such an imposing record against your kind. Especially when you consider that, for most left-handed players, it would normally feel like an advantage on tour, no matter how slight. Normally, this would make you an uncomfortable proposition for your opponent -except, of course, that opponent is named Jannik Sinner.
As for Sinner, he now sets up a semi-final date with Alexander Zverev as he looks to get his season up and running, following a subpar start to the season by his standards. He’d be hoping he can finally go one better at this tournament and make the finals. For tennis fans and maybe even the lefties, it stirs up another interesting subplot to the 2026 season, as we try to figure out if and who will be the first lefty to get the better of the infallible Italian.
