Rennae Stubbs voices concerns over Iga Swiatek’s recent on-court behaviour

Swiatek’s latest setback has Rennae Stubbs concerned.

Iga Swiatek’s 2024 season took another hit on Thursday, as she was stunned by Magda Linette in straight sets during the Miami Open first round.

It’s just the latest blow in a season that hasn’t gone to plan, and it looks increasingly unlikely to be the last. Swiatek is far from the force she once was.

Swiatek’s presence used to unsettle opponents before a ball was even struck. That relentless focus and overwhelming playstyle feel like a distant memory now, replaced by something far less intimidating.

Rennae Stubbs noticed this too, commenting not just on the physical drop-off but also on how Swiatek seems mentally diminished these days.

Rennae Stubbs criticises Iga Swiatek’s conduct

Speaking on her podcast, Stubbs shared her thoughts before Swiatek’s defeat to Linette, but her points ended up echoing what happened in the match.

Even though she spoke before the loss, her comments lined up closely with how the match unfolded, and Linette later explained exactly how she managed to come out on top.

“The thing I don’t like to see is someone getting so upset on the court. We saw it from Coco Gauff as well.

“It’s about what you are showing to your opponent. I’m a big proponent of that, even when I’m coaching. I’m like, you can’t show your opponent vulnerability, you just can’t, especially when you are playing against great players who are going to take advantage of that”, Stubbs said.

She continued: “I always talk about locker room reputation, but that is the locker room reputation. If you look down the other end and see her getting frustrated, you feel like ‘okay, I have a shot’, especially on a court which is usually pretty good for her. It’s quite slow in Indian Wells.”

The Australian then shifted focus to Wim Fissette: “So, listen, we have spoken about it last year. I thought Wim Fisette was on his last legs last year. She wins Wimbledon and gives him basically eight more months left on his contract.”

“He has to be under a lot of pressure going into the clay court season if she doesn’t pick it up and win a couple of tournaments.”

Iga Swiatek’s Challenging Start to the 2026 Season

Swiatek’s performances in 2026 haven’t been poor, but they certainly haven’t lived up to the high expectations that come with her reputation. By her standards, it’s been a slow start.

She hasn’t won a title yet this year, and there hasn’t even been a tournament where she looked poised to change that.

Her runs at the Australian Open, Qatar Open and Indian Wells all ended in quarter-final exits, but her early exit in Miami was perhaps the most surprising of them all.

At 24 years old, she needs to find answers quickly. These unexpected losses are becoming too familiar for someone of her ranking.

If not for her unexpected Wimbledon win last year, 2025 would have already been seen as a step back. Without any changes soon, this season could end up being even more disappointing.
